FLEET TOO STRONG FOR IMPROVED VALE COLTS

Raging Bull Senior Colts League Cup Quarter Final      Vale 8    -    Fleetwood 48

 Sunday 28th Mar 2010

Vale of Lune’s Senior Colts season came to a grinding holt on Sunday against a highly skilful and powerful Fleetwood Senior Colts. Through the season Vale have been competing in League E and they now found themselves against a team from League B, the prospect did not haunt the home side and the score line flatters the visitors as until the final 10minutes Vale were very competitive and gave everything without much reward.

Vale went into the game full of confidence, and with a strong squad of 22 to use throughout the game, the thoughts of a semi final place were a reality and the first 10minutes of the game proved how far the home side have come this season. Vale were battling away in the visitors 22 for a sustained period of time, skipper Clarkson and O’Donnell making meters every time they got hands on the ball. Fleetwood’s defence held firm and a difficult missed penalty added to the early woes. Fleetwood then gained the upper hand with their outstanding stand off jinking in and out of the Vale team to cross out wide for an unconverted try.

Vale were then on the back foot again, but superb defending from Hatton, Hall and O’Brien kept the Fleet side out and as the home side launched and attack the visitors gave away a penalty with Fawcett duly took. Back cam Fleetwood and the next 10minutes were a disaster for the home side with two converted tries produced from the stand off who was without doubt the thorn in the Vale side, a penalty from 10 added to the score line.

As half time approached the Vale managed to string several plays together and finally had Fleetwood worried and back pedalling. Pace from Jones and support from Whyke and Haddow created a phase which saw Clarkson power over for a well deserved try. The half time score stood at 8-22 and Vale had it all to play for.

The second half was not how it was planned, Vale playing into a strong wind were put on the back foot by Fleet continually but strong defence from the home side kept the visitors at bay. When Vale launched attacks they were duly halted by a powerful Fleetwood forward pack and some costly mistakes meant it was never going to be Vale’s day. Their best chance created by the impressive Haddow who beat 2 defenders and gave Lebaldi and Jones the overlap but a wayward pass meant it was not meant to be.

As the game went into the last 15minutes Vale began chasing the game taking tap penalties and stringing the ball around but this caused mistakes which the Fleet took advantage of and chances to attack which they did and used the spaces to their advantage. Another 4 tries, 3 of which were converted, rounded off a good performance from the away side and who will truly be in with a shot of winning the competition.

The final score ended 8-48 but as Vale were chasing the game the score line does not do justice for the home side who had a never say die attitude, showed how much they have improved as a team through out the season and proved how mature they are to accept defeat by a better side. The Senior Colts season draws to a close now with a League title and a Cup quarter final place, due reward for a side put back together this season and many years of struggle. Easter Saturday sees them play a touring side from Weston Super Mare RFC which will be a fitting end for a great bunch on lads, and many of these players will carry on wearing the red and white of Vale in the Senior teams in many years to come so keep an eye on the names!!!!

Raging Bull Colts League Cup-        Vale of Lune Senior Colts     19        Ashton-on-Mersey     10

Sunday 14/03/10

Vale of Lune Senior Colts travelled to Ashton-on-Mersey with a depleted squad on Sunday due to injuries and unavailability’s but still managed to come away with a well fought win against a powerful and committed home side. The Colts League Cup consists of the top 16 sides from each of the 5 Senior Leagues in a knockout style competition, Vale who finished top of League E now get the chance to prove themselves against teams who having been plying their trade many leagues above them.

New on-field captain Sam Clarkson got his troops pumped up for what was going to be a feisty encounter and the Vale took the game to Ashton in the first 5minutes. Powerful runs from Jeffreys and Aspinall made dents into the home defence but Vale were unable to come away with any points from all the pressure. This was to prove costly, as soon as Ashton got hands on the ball they managed to string some superb play together and take play into the Vale 22. The influential number 10, who was a thorn in the Vale side all day, was involved every play and kept Ashton going forward. Only some brilliant defence from Jones and Newton denied Ashton scoring.

After 15minutes the pressure tolled and Ashton created an overlap and the winger was not being denied this time, diving over in the corner for an unconverted try. Clarkson brought the team together and what he said did the trick. Vale straight back on the attack and playing in the home sides 22, again Edlin and Katsande make meters every time they got hands on the ball. Vale’s influential half back combination of Whyke and Harris linking well again and giving quality clean ball for the backs to run. It was this combination who created the chance for Newton to wriggle his way over for an unconverted try. This was how the game stayed until half time, Vale 5 Ashton 5.

The second half began at the same frantic pace as the first half did and with both teams exchanging periods of sustained pressure. It was Ashton to get on the score sheet first, due to Vale’s increasing indiscipline the home side took advantage of several penalties and opted to run the ball and the forwards bundled over for another unconverted try taking the score to 10-5. Again stern words from Clarkson had a positive effect on the team, Martin, Hatton, Hall and Watson began taking the ball to the home side with a number of drives. Harris again giving the backs space to run with Fawcett and Sharples linking well in their new centre partnership.

Newton making another busting run into the Ashton 22, sucked players in to the breakdown creating an overlap and when the ball found itself to Whyke out wide the scrum half sprinted away from the covering defenders to go over with Fawcett adding the extras taking the score to 12-10 in Vale’s favour. 5minutes later the Vale defence continued to apply pressure onto the home side and as the Ashton centre went for a looping miss pass Sharples popped up to sprint from inside his own half under the posts for a converted try. 19-10 to Vale and the game was over. The final 5minutes were still frantic as ever with Ashton pressuring the Vale defence but to no avail. As the final whistle blew the first job had been completed by the Senior Colts and they have their name in the hat with the draw for the next round taking place on Monday. This may not have been the best performance of the season but nothing less than 100% commitment brought the win.

Vale- Newton (1T), Jones, Sharples (1T), Fawcett (2C), Katsande, Harris, Whyke (1T), Clarkson, Hall, Edlin, Hatton, Jeffreys, Aspinall, Martin and Watson. Subs- Adiele and Woodhead.

Vale Senior Colts  25  -  10  Bolton Senior Colts

Sunday 21st February 2010

Vale of Lune Senior Colts clinched the Raging Bull North West Colts Senior E League title on Sunday with a demolition of closest rivals Bolton 25-10. This is due reward for a team put back together at the start of this season after disbanding 2 seasons ago, mass publicity and RFU coaches have brought the lads back to the Vale in abundance with 32 players signing on for the season. Sunday’s game was in effect a Championship decider, the Vale knew that if they won the title was theirs but if Bolton won then it was down to next weekends reverse fixture. Home advantage gave Vale the edge and with big support the lads knew today was going to be their day, and they didn’t disappoint.

Coaches Powell and Sutcliffe had 27 players at their disposal for Sunday’s game giving several selection headaches prior to the game but both knew that the team selected was more than capable of pulling off the win needed. Straight from kick off Vale pushed into the Bolton half and knocked the visitors back at every opportunity, O’Donnell, Jeffreys and the ever impressive Clarkson making yards every time they got hands on ball.

Bolton time after time killed the ball giving Vale three penalties but the home side could not capitalise with Fawcett and Whyke having a rare off day with the boot, it meant that Vale would have to rely on tries to win and soon enough the breakthrough came. A shortened lineout using Clarkson again with the crash ball and after a series of picks from the forwards concluded with Edlin powering over for a converted try. Straight from the kick off the home side let their foot off the gas as Bolton made their first hunt into the Vale half and came away with an unconverted try. The half time whistle blew with Vale leading 7-5 and it was all to play for in the second half.

Stern words from the coaches at half time seemed to have a huge effect on the Vale lads and they took the game to Bolton once again, Harris pulling the strings at fly half giving debutant Haddow space to release Sharples who didn’t have the pace to beat his defender but was always able to offload to support. 15 minutes into the second half Vale made changes with Katsande, Charnley, O’Brien, Hesketh and Watson coming on to replace Fawcett, Martin, O’Donnell, Hall and the energetic Lebaldi who had worked himself into the ground yet again. This proved to be the lift they needed and changed the game. The increase in tempo from the Vale lads caught Bolton out with two tries in 5 minutes, after several phases of play which allowed two dynamic runs from Jeffreys the first he crashed over himself and the second he offloaded to Jones who went sliding over and suddenly the score had changed to Vale 17   Bolton 5 and seemingly the game was over.

Vale did not stop there, again powerful runs from Tomlinson, Tagg and Charnley forced Bolton to concede a penalty in front of the posts which allowed Harris to collect the 3 points and give the Vale a 15 point lead with 7 minutes remaining. Now it was the time for the backs to produce some magic, some great passing and support from Haddow freed the powerful Hesketh to waddle his way to the line for an unconverted try and the game was now truly over. Bolton made one last advance into the Vale half and came away with 5 points which was due reward for some fine play and the never say die attitude which has been shown by all teams in the Raging bull Leagues this season.

As the full time whistle blew the Vale players and supporters cheered what was a well fought 25-10 victory and could now call themselves League E Champions which is truly deserved after a long season. The lads now go on to the League Cup which starts on the 7th March with the draw taking place this week, the double could be on and all Vale players know there is still plenty of hard work to get through till they can have their well deserved rest!

Vale- Fawcett;   Jones (1T), Haddow, O’Donnell, Sharples;   Harris (1C 1P), Whyke;   Clarkson, Lebaldi, Hall;   Jeffreys (1T), Hatton;   Edlin (1T), Martin and Tagg.

Subs- Watson, O’Brien, Tomlinson, Charnley, Hesketh (1T), Katsande and Newton.

Res- Adiele, Clark, Aspinall, Swinden and Coulton.

Ellesmere Port 0 – Vale of Lune Senior Colts 10

Friday, January 29th, 2010

 Sunday 24th January 2010

Vale Senior Colts travelled to Ellesmere Port knowing that a win would push them closer to the Raging Bull Senior Colts League E title. After leaving Lancaster with the sunshine trying to break through they arrived at Port with the rain driving down and the pitch looking very heavy under foot. Captain O’Donnell knowing a result would have to be ground out rather than the attractive rugby normally played.

Vale kicked off and were immediately put under pressure with Harris drop out going straight out on the full presenting Port with a good opportunity to attack. Vale’s pack kicked on and the front row of Watson, Martin and Edlin demolished the Port tight three to turn over the ball and drive the home sides pack back. Vale’s half back combination of Whyke and Harris, who are undoubtedly tipped for 1st team call up’s in the near future, linked superbly in open play and time after time put the Vale of the front foot with pressure kicks that put Port back into their 22.

A period of sustained pressure by the Vale forwards, inspired again by the excellent Clarkson, lead to a series of penalties conceded by the Port pack and when the opportunity of 3 points arose in front of the posts Fawcett took the chance to give Vale a 3-0 lead. With half time closing in Vale launched another blistering attack, a kick chase from Katsande lead to a knock on by the Port full back and from the resulting scrum a series of phases from the whole Vale squad allowed a cheeky ‘dummy and go’ from scrum half Whyke who dived over under the posts with Fawcett converting taking the half time score to Vale 10 Port 0.

The second half started like the first with players playing at an unbelievable pace but also with a high skill level, but it was Port putting the pressure on the Vale 22. Despite a series of phases Port were unable to break down a solid away team defence, even when Vale went down to 14 men with the sin binning of Tomlinson. The defensive display lead by back rows Hall and Lebaldi, the later picking up man of the match for an all round committed performance. When Vale got hands on ball they again put phases of play together and looked dangerous but Ports defence held strong. Substitutes Coulton, Adiele and Clark proved that the strength in the Vale squad is there to be seen and Adeiele especially unlucky not to be on the score sheet.

The second half closed as it began with Vale winning 10-0, the lads must now focus even harder with next Sunday’s game being the top of the table clash away at Bolton.

Newton;  Jones, Fawcett (1P, 1C), O’Donnell (Cpt), Katsande;  Harris, Whyke;  (1T);  Clarkson, Lebaldi, Hall;  Hatton, Tomlinson;  Edlin, Martin Watson; Subs- Coulson, Adiele, Clark, Woodhead;

Ellesmere Port 13 Vale of Lune Senior Colts 27

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Vale of Lune senior colts bounced back from their first defeat of the season last week, with a comfortable victory away at Ellesmere Port. The players responded well to captain for the day O’Donnell and were out of the blocks at pace and had a score on the board after 3 minutes, Harris with a text book kick off enabled Clarkson to win the ball and charge into Ports 22, the ball was moved wide, but Sharples stopped short of the line, from the resulting five metre scrum Clarkson surged over.

Due to poor discipline at ruck and maul, the next ten minutes were all Port as Vale gave away a succession of penalties, resulting in Port taking a six points to five lead.

On nineteen minutes Vale retook the lead after strong runs from Swinden and Clarkson, the ball was moved wide for Jones to power over in the corner. Vale were now beginning to dominate with Jeffereys and Hall regularly stealing line out ball, and McRae, Martin and Coulton working hard in the loose, after a period of sustained pressure and some resolute defence from Port, Vale again decided to move it wide this time Katsande finished well after a looping pass from Whyke found Sharples who put the winger away, to give Vale a half time lead of Fifteen points to six.

Vale again started well after a probing kick from Harris the forwards worked the ball through several phases with Tomlinson in the thick of the action, Jones who performed well all afternoon burrowed over from close range for his second try. Vale again took their foot off the gas for ten minutes, allowing port to get back into the game due to a series of missed tackles with a converted try.

Vale where further disrupted when the influential Clarkson and Whyke had to leave the field with injuries, but Fawcett and Lebaldi as all the other replacements did, stepped up to the mark with confident displays, which allowed Vale to finish strongly, again Vale had success moving the ball wide with Albieri making a try scoring debut after a strong run from Newton and good handling from Harris, O’Donnell and Jones, Fawcett converting to complete the scoring.

Although this wasn’t the colts best performance of the season it was a positive response to last weeks defeat, and has got their season back on track, Clarkson was again awarded the man of the match award after an all action display, Hatton and Tomlinson performed strongly in the second half, and Swinden, Jones and Hall played with commitment and set a great example for eighty minutes.

Team: A Newton, C Jones (2T), S Sharples, J O’Donnell (capt), G Katsande (1T), D Harris, J Whyke, B Coulton, R Martin, S McRae, D Jeffereys, S Tomlinson, M Hall, D Swinden, S Clarkson (1T). Replacements – R O’Brien, J Eldin, E Hatton, L Pye, K Woodhead, R Fawcett (1C), M Clark, A Albieri (1T), A Lebaldi.

Vale of Lune Senior Colts 12 Anselmians 31

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Vale of Lune Senior Colts produced their worst performance of the season which coincided with their first defeat of the season, but credit must go to Anselmians who played to their coaches game plan and played with a tough and physical approach.  Kick Off was delayed by 30minutes due to the away side being stuck in the motorway traffic but when they arrived warmed up with purpose whilst the Vale lads seemed to be in cruise mode expecting another victory against a team who only had 15 players. From the start it was clear that Anselmians had come for the win and to claim top spot in League E.

Personal changes prior to the game seemed to make a difference to the Vale with Whyke, who was injured playing for the second team the day before, having to start on the bench and Newton having to fill in at scrum half with Clark at fullback. The Vale lads started quiet and found themselves 3-0 down to a penalty from the influential fly half, who went on to spoil the Vale’s day by scoring a further 2 tries in the first half. Despite courageous tackling from Hall, Sharples and McRae Vale were unable to stop a flowing Anselmians side who despite the awful conditions under foot made rugby look easy a half time score of 24-0 to the visitors.

A half time talk and 4 substitutions seemed to buck the Vale’s ideas up and started they second half the stronger and managed to put some good phases of play together and this resulted in Clarkson powering over for a well worked try. Anselmians soon hit back with a break away try of their own taking the score to 31-7 in the visitors favour and seemingly out of reach for the Vale lads. 3 more substitutions from the Vale coach again spurred on the home team and again fresh legs proved to mean a lot more with Aspinall driving over from short range after some good forwards play, Harris missing the conversion from in front of the posts to cap off a very poor display from the Vale team.

Despite the poor performance their was some positives, Vale’s scrum and lineout was solid throughout and the forward can take heart from this but a big stand out of the day was number 8 Sam Clarkson who never gave up and proved that he is a defiantly a First Team number 8 in future years. A final score of Vale 12 Anselmians 31 did justice to the professional approach from the away side and leave Vale licking their wounds and knowing that this performance has to be removed from their armoury and with next weeks trip to Ellsemere Port looming large where nothing more than a win will do. Vale, Anselmians and Bolton are all now joint top of League E with 13 points, but with Vale’s points difference poorer than the other two teams it shows them sitting 3rd.

Vale- Clark, Pye, Sharples, Jones, Woodhead, Harris (1C), Newton, Clarkson (1T), Hall, Edlin, Hatton, Tomlinson, McRae, Martin and Coulton. Subs- Aspinall (1T), Jeffreys, Lebaldi, Swinden, Katsande, Fawcett and Whyke.

Bolton 15 Vale of Lune 17

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Vale of Lune Senior Colts travelled to top of the table Bolton in what was going to be the toughest battle of the season so far, it would also go along way to proving who would gain the upper hand in the title race so soon into the season.

The opening exchanges proved that Vale and Bolton were equal in most departments and proved that they were by far the two best teams in League E for the season. Vale demolished the home sides scrum on regular occasions with the front row of Watson, McRae and Coulson causing problems to their opposite numbers. With 25minutes gone a turnover from the influential Clarkson followed by a piece of magic from scrum half Whyke proved to much for the Bolton defence, throwing an outrageous dummy and beating four defenders before going over underneath the posts for the opening score, Harris converting.

With half time looming a break by the hardworking Edlin gave Harris and Sharples a two on one which they could not execute, to the frustration of the coaching staff, this allowing Bolton to counter attack and within seconds the home side had broke down to the other end and scored a converted try taking the half time score to 7-7.

The second half could not have started worse for Vale, from the kick off a couple of mistakes by the away side allowed Bolton in for an unconverted try. It was at this point Vale had to show their character and come from behind, a situation they had not found themselves in all season. After a period of scrappy play Vale started to build themselves into the game again with substitute Katsande intercepting from the halfway and sprinting away from the defenders to touchdown in the corner, Harris holding his nerve for a successful conversion from the touchline taking Vale ahead 14-12 with less than 10minutes remaining. From the kick off Vale gave a penalty away and some indiscipline from Newton allowing Bolton to take the 3 points and the lead 15-14.

This seemed to spur Vale into life and proceeded to play the best rugby of the day, with Jeffreys, Lebaldi and Man of the Match Hall tackling any Bolton player that came in their direction and with Sharples making some telling runs in attack the pressure increased on Bolton who with 2 minute remaining gave a penalty away in the red zone, the Bolton player binned for his sins. Without hesitation Harris called for the kicking tee and slotted it home sending the Vale players and supporters into raptures.

Vale came of the pitch knowing that a score line of 17-15 was justified despite the poor performance but if the lads are to taste silverware this season, this performance has to be a one off.

Team (scorers in brackets)- Newton, Sharples, Jones, O’Donnell, Clark, Harris (2C 1P), Whyke (1T), Clarkson, Hall, Edlin, Jeffreys, Hatton, Coulson, McRae, Watson. Subs- Lebaldi, Martin, Aspinall, Katsande (1T), Pye and Woodward.

Vale of Lune Senior Colts 48 Eccles 5

Monday, December 7th, 2009

On what was meant to be a free weekend for the Vale of Lune Senior Colts a friendly fixture was arranged by the coaching team against an Eccles side who play their trade 2 league above the Vale outfit in League C, the decision to entertain Eccles was to find out where the Vale side were and give them much needed experience ready for the assault on Cup competition later in the season where they could be drawn against anyone in the North West Raging Bull Colts League, and it was a performance that could send messages through the leagues!

The coaching team had the luxury of 26 players to choose from and with it being a friendly rolling substitution were the added ingredient of the day allowing every player to get much needed game time under their belts and also giving the opportunity to see players in different positions.

Vale started at a blistering pace and for the whole of the first half showed why they are the talk of the club at the moment with the forwards demolishing the oppositions scrum and Hatton winning several lineout’s against the head allowing the half back combination of Whyke and Harris to cause havoc in the opposition line, the later having the best game of his season so far. Tries came at a steady rate in the first half with some quality play through O’Donnell, leading the team for the first time today, Jones and Newton giving a half time score of a very healthy looking 34-0.

In the second half Eccles upped their game and it was the turn of the Vale to show that defence can win games, solid tackling by Clarkson, Tomlinson, Edlin, and Woodhead limited Eccles to only 1 try in 15minutes of pressure. Vale then burst into attacking life with 10minutes to play and with Harris again at the forefront of every play Vale ran in 2 more tries to seal what was a comprehensive win.

Its back to league action next weekend for the Senior Colts with the top of the table clash at Bolton in what could already be tipped as a title decider in League E despite it being so early in the campaign. With a win against a side 2 leagues higher Vale now to need to take what was their best performance of the season so far and build even more!

Team- Sharples, Lebaldi, Jones, O’Donnell, Katsande, Harris, Whyke, Clarkson, Hall, Edlin, Tomlinson, Hatton, McRae, Martin and Watson. Subs- Aspinall, Coulton, Jeffreys, Swinden, Tagg, Pye, Clark, Woodhead, Atkinson, Newton, Fawcett.

Tries- Jones (2), O’Donnell, Harris, Clarkson, Hatton, McRae and Newton.

Cons- Whyke (2) and Harris (2).

Clitheroe Colts 7 Vale of Lune Senior Colts 50

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Vale of Lunes colts 1st visit to Clitheroe in their history produced an entertaining game, with the final score line a fine reward for some attractive play from the vale, but didn’t really do justice to a spirited Clitheroe outfit that will surely turn sides over in the league this season.

Vale were quick out of the blocks being 12 points up in 5 minutes, through a piece of quick thinking by Wyke who darted over from a penalty under the posts, from the restart Wykes box kick was collected by Katsande who showed great pace to finish in the corner.

On 25 minutes it was that man again as Wyke burrowed over after a period of sustained pressure by the Vale forwards who retained the ball through several phases with Eldin, McRae, Tomlinson and Jeffereys prominent.

This was followed by a period of pressure from Clitheroe, where the Vale showed great character and determination in keeping their line intact, the tackling of Tagg, Hall, McRae and skipper Newton was of the highest order during this rear guard and prominent through out.

The deadlock was broken with a fine break by Harris who drew the full back and fed Newton to score, on the stroke of half time Vale scored their 5th try when the powerful running O’Donnell broke the line and good handling from Newton and Tagg resulted in Jefferey scoring in the corner.

The second half proved to be a much more competitive, with Clitheroe raising their game significantly, the half started with Swinden making a surging forty metre break stopped only by a great cover tackle from the Clitheroe winger, Eldin who worked tirelessly throughout was in support and was held up over the line. The strong running Clitheroe centre then broke out of defence and looked sure to score, until Newton appeared from no where to scythe him down just short of the line.

Vale scored their 6th try after twenty minutes of the half after strong running from O’Donnell and Tagg, Martin showed great awareness sneaking over on the blind side, Clitheroe again responded with a period of pressure, this time their prop was allowed to power over for a deserved score.

Vale finished the game with two contrasting but quality scores, the first saw the improving Harriss dance through several defenders before rounding the full back to score in the corner, the second was a real team effort after the several phases slick passing from Wyke, Hall and Martin saw McRae score in the corner.

Man of the Match Wyke added five conversions to complete the scoring, and is now almost back to his best after a serious knee injury, O’Donnell, Tagg and Eldin were also influential through out.

Team:

Murphy(Pye 40), Woodhead, Newton, O’Donnell, Katsande, Harris, Wyke, Watson (Martin 30), McRae, Eldin, Jeffereys (Hatton 60), Tomlinson, Hall, Swinden, Tagg.
