The Vikings took on the visitors from Wigan in an eagerly awaited return fixture following a feisty contest a fortnight ago. With the skipper’s pre-match mantra of discipline still ringing in the Vales player’s ears, it was they who started in determined fashion. Excellent work from Melville to offload in the tackle, presented winger Shepherd with the first score.

The two packs then slugged it out for supremacy on a heavy pitch, front row men Jackson, Bolsover and Ferguson working tirelessly at the coalface. With the Viking forwards now gaining the upper hand at the breakdown, stand off Miller worked the phases and centre Cowper battered away at the Wigan defence, eventually releasing McAllister to stretch over in the corner.

More continuity from backs and forwards alike gave Shepherd another run in; Melville added the extras to give the Vikings a 17-point half time lead.

At the interval Skipper McAllister was able to make full use of the squad at his disposal to freshen thing up. The changes had an immediate impact, the ball was moved wide to find replacement winger Jones in space to win the footrace to the line.

With the Wigan pack visibly tiring, the Vikings again spread the ball allowing Jones to dance through the cover defence for his second try, putting the home side out of reach.

The scoring wasn’t finished Wigan hit back with a well worked try of their own, before Jones found the looping McAllister to finish in the corner. Next week the Vikings face a tough trip away at Clitheroe.

Saturday 20/02/10

After last weeks red card fireworks the Vikings looked to avenge an early season defeat at the hands of the visitors. Skipper McAllister had the luxury of a full squad and the omens looked well as back row man Griffiths powered his way over following an impressive forward drive. In cold but perfect rugby conditions the Vikings sensed they had the edge on the visitors as Armistead, Tennant and McAllister profited from some fluid approach work to further extend the vale lead. More was to come before the break as Miller and livewire Tennant again breached the Bolton defensive line.

With the cushion of a comfortable lead the Vikings were able to call upon a full compliment of substitutions. The changes had an immediate impact as Rogerson crashed over to mark a memorable comeback. Dave Halliwell then used his considerable bulk to inflict more pain on the visitors as the Vikings looked to build their biggest win of the season.

Wigan III 19 ~ Vale Vikings 38

13/02/10

The Vikings took this opportunity to bounce back from last weeks setback against Rossendale to record an excellent away win at Wigan. In an ill tempered affair that brought a flurry of red cards, it was the home side who started with intent registering the games first try as the visitors struggled to get into the contest.

In a game where violence constantly simmered below the surface, one of the many fracas resulted in two straight reds for the Vale and one for the home side.

With the Vikings now surrendering a man advantage and playing in a stupor, even the most quixotic of Vale supporters could not have imagined some of the rugby that followed.

Gradually the Vikings started to turn things around, Pennington and Manning imposed themselves at the breakdown in the face of some dubious intimidation from the home side.

Foxcroft got the scoring underway gathering from a lineout to crash over. Then after the break Jimmy Birchall glided past his man to score wide out. Not to be outdone skipper McAllister showed all his guile and experience to bag a brace. More was to come as turbo charged scrum half Tennant danced his way through the home defence for two well taken tries.

Miller and Melville split the kicking duties adding two conversions apiece. Miller drop goaling his conversions from the acutest of angles to cap a commanding performance from the stand off.

Fylde IV 17 ~ Vale Vikings 26

Monday, January 25th, 2010

23/01/10

The Vikings completed the double against their Fylde opponents with a well deserved win at the Woodlands Memorial Ground. The visitors got off to the perfect start with a sweeping backs move that allowed skipper McAllister to go over in the corner.

In a frantic first half both sides seemed keen to blow away the cobwebs of the weather-enforced layoff. With the Vikings again on the attack, a forced pass popped up into the hands of a Fylde defender who was able to streak away for the score. Then further trouble for the Vikings as a rare defensive lapse allowed Fylde in for a try.

At the turnaround the Vikings were again under pressure conceding a penalty that Fylde duly kicked to extend their lead.

Then the Vikings pack as it had threatened to do in the first half took control. A series of pick and drives demoralised and drove back the Fylde eight. Pennington was the first to profit muscling his way over following some excellent interplay from the forwards. Then from good quick ball Miller fed Ecclestone to power his through to give the visitors the lead. With the Vikings now firmly in the ascendancy, a fine away win was capped by scrum half Tennant who showed an impressive turn of pace leaving defenders in his wake, to extend the winning margin.

Thornton Cleveleys 22 ~ Vale Vikings 22

This was anything but a bore draw as the Vikings continued their league campaign away at Thornton Cleveleys, A slow start by the visitors handed the initiative to the home side, whose dangerous looking back line ensured Thornton went into the break leading 19-6.

The second half started in much the same manner, the Vale line coming under intense pressure, however stout defence by the visitors repelled the Thornton attacks and with it changed the momentum of the game. The Vale forwards raised the intensity and pressurised their younger opponents, back row men Griffiths and Manning were everywhere.

The home side were now conceding penalties and the metronomic boot of Melville duly obliged putting the Vale in range. The visitors then got a deserved try; experienced prop Paul Bolton showing a keen eye for the line barged his way over from close range. Melville added the extras, and then slotted another excellently struck penalty the fifth of the day; to give the Vikings the lead. Then in a frantic finish, a controversially awarded penalty gave the home side a simple kick in front of the posts. The Thornton kicker missed it and victory seemed to be with the Vikings. However, in unprecedented circumstances the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken for a perceived infringement while the kick was taken. Harsh on the Vikings following an excellent comeback.

Vale Vikings 25 ~ Bolton II 7

12/12/09

The Vikings took this opportunity to avenge an early season defeat at the hands of the visitors. With both sides making a tentative start on a heavy pitch it was left to the reliable boot of Melville to break the deadlock with a well-struck penalty, the only score of the half.

After the break the Vikings upped the pace, sensing a slender looking three-point lead would not be enough to keep the dangerous looking visitors at bay.  Feeding off good ball standoff Miller probed; eventually finding Tom Smith to crash over for his first try. Then good pressure from Harris resulted in the youngster going in under the posts for a well-taken opportunist try.

Bolton then rallied scoring from a well-worked tap penalty. With the game still in the balance the Vikings pinned the visitors back in their own half at every opportunity. Smith again took matters into his own hands, barging his way over to score his second try in a man of the match performance.

Now playing with confidence, the Vikings scoring spree had not finished; McAllister’s perfectly weighted pass released winger Jones who finished well in the corner on the final whistle.

Raging Bull Trophy Round 1

Despite the abnormally high level of unavailability’s and injuries within the club, the Vikings travelled south to Cheshire with a strong looking side, thanks in no small part to the efforts of skipper McAllister.

In difficult conditions the home side were first into their stride, a defensive lapse at the lineout allowed the dangerous looking Bowden backs to breakaway and score under the posts.

Credit to the Vikings who then restricted their hosts and made better use of the prevailing wind, the boot of Harris instrumental in pinning Bowden back.

Playing into the gale second half the Vikings upped the pace, Pennington made ground at the base of the scrum enabling the visitors to exert some pressure. Melville struck a well-taken penalty to ensure a tense finish.

An opportunity to snatch a win then presented itself, Jones stepped the cover to release the galloping Pennington, a desperate defensive hand ensured the pass went to ground and the Vikings exited the cup.

Fine win for Vikings at Pendle

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Miller Homes Division 3(N)

14/11/09

Pendle 1st  10  -  11  Vale of Lune 3rds

The Vikings travelled to Pendle to meet a Pendle side flying high in the League and only having lost one game.

On a heavy ground the Vale playing with the wind got the best of the early exchanges.

After 20 minutes a good handling move through the backs resulted in Liam Houghton touching down for the first points.

Five minutes later a good position was obtained for Aaron Melville to drop a goal to put the Vikings further ahead and give a half time score of  0  -  8 to the visitors.

After half time a spell of heavy pressure from Pendle resulted in them pulling back 3 points with a penalty.

An excellent threequarter move from Pendle ended with their fullback going under the posts for a fine try which was converted to put them in the lead at 10  -  8.

Not giving up the Vikings battled back to the Pendle end to earn a well deserved penalty which Melville put over to give the Vikings back the lead.

It was now backs to the wall but the Vikings held out gamely for the last quarter to secure a fine victory and so becoming the Team of the Week in the Miller Homes Leagues.

Vale Vikings 7 ~ Clitheroe 0

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

07/11/09

In appalling conditions the Vikings battled for a deserved victory against a strong Clitheroe outfit. Early pressure gave fullback Melville the chance to open the scoring, however conditions underfoot contributed to the penalty going wide. With the Vikings starting the brighter, quick ball in the Clitheroe half presented Scrum half Hirst the opportunity to throw a dummy and score the games only try under the posts. Encouraged by the early score, the Vikings pressed again; outside centre Rigby going close only to be thwarted by resolute Clitheroe defence.

In the second half the visitors enjoyed more possession, and with the pitch deteriorating both sides found it hard to create anything. With the game in the balance the Vikings spurned a number of scoring opportunities. However, an excellent kick and chase game orchestrated by stand off Miller kept the visitors at bay and ensured a home win for the Vikings.
