VALE OF LUNE DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE FINISHES

WITH A BANG

The Vale of Lune Rugby Union for Secondary Schools Development League concluded for 2009 with a bang and proved to be a huge success with players, teachers, parents, coaches and organisers. Since September 7 schools from the area signed up to the Development League with the focus purely on giving players who do not normally play rugby a chance to shine in a competitive sport and give schools regular fixtures which are organised by the local RFU Community Rugby Coach.

The League was run at U14 (Year 8/9) and U16 (Year 10/11) level with games being played at 13a-side and a straight 12minutes. Several rules were put in during the league, for example uncontested scrums, no lifting in the lineouts and no kicking in open play in the hope that free flowing open running rugby would be played, and the players did not disappoint!! U14’s played on half pitches whilst U16’s played on full length pitches and with the Groundsman allowing the first team pitch to be played on the players relished to play on the biggest pitch in the North West and showing that the future of rugby is here!

Points were awarded but only if you turned up for the round of fixtures- 3 for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss and 0 if you did not attend. This was to encourage schools to attend no matter what the score was going to be. This proved a big incentive for schools.

Finally a big thanks must go to Dave Harrison from Pye Motors and Iveco for sponsoring the Development League and giving a replica New Zealand ball to all players in the League, t-shirts to the winning U16 teams and jackets to winning coaches.
