BUNCH OF FIVES K.O. VALE. VALE OF LUNE 8 LYMM 31 Can the Vale of Lune pass the ball? Yes, the Vale of Lune can pass the ball. Can they pass the ball to each other? Sometimes they can pass the ball to each other. See Adam, from Lymm, catch the ball. Can Adam run fast? Yes, Adam can run fast. See Adam run. See James Curran chase Adam. Can James catch Adam? NO! See Adam touch down. Will his friend Nick convert? Yes, Nick will kick the ball over the bar.
Lymm's opening try of the second half after nine minutes knocked the proverbial stuffing out of the Vale. Six minutes later, with the Vale reeling on the ropes, the visitors banged in another try from Jim Ferguson. The blows continued to rain down and a groggy defence wilted in the sixty first minute when Lee Price wrestled his way over for a try which Nick Shaw converted. However, the Vale pulled themselves round. Their heads began to clear and with the sal volatile coursing through their nostrils they went on the offensive. Ian Bird made a defiant run, Jack Payne skipped through the opposition and James Bryan launched an attack from the goal line after he had marked the ball and taken a quick tap. Andy Miller was hauled down short of the line but in truth Lymm rode the punches, and swayed confidently with some nimble footwork. A late try from Jason Cundik only served to underline Lymm's confidence as the Cheshire side recorded their first league victory at Powder House Lane. The superb late summer weather continued but despite the high temperature Collette refused to wear her shorts, although the physio did treat 'The Last fo the Summer Wine' gentlemen, from both camps, to a tantilising glimpse of a finely turned calf. The opening try of the game scored by Dave Halliwell after ten minutes of sparring ended the voyeuristic dreaming for some on the touchline. Dave in fact weighed in with his second try in successive weeks after the Press Secretary had confused him with Malcolm Fowler at L.S.H, easily done after sampling some of the excellent pre match hospitality! The build up to the try contained some positive passages of rugby from the Vale. Andrew Garnett, in his 50th game, made a break; Neil Bennetts floated a kick into the corner to force a five metre scrum from which Big Dave scored his try. Three minutes later Vale failed to clear their lines, scrum half Chris Kinsey first of all floated like a butterfly and then stung like a bee for his try, which Shaw converted. As the earlier handling errors disappeared from both side's game, some crisp exchanges took place. Bird, Lee Farnworth and Bennetts all played their part in a crisp attack and James Curran not only hurtled down the left flank but was able to resist all advances until help arrived. Garnett kicked the Vale into the lead with a penalty goal in the thirty eighth minute in a closely scored half that did not fully prepare anyone for the flurry of activity that was to follow. Lymm's devastating opening score was the result of a misdirected pass and the subsequent pummelling put the result way beyond the home side. Can grown men cry in their beer? Yes, grown men can cry in their beer.
