TEN TRIES TO TOP THE TABLE VALE A 56 ROCHDALE 7 After the trials and tribulations of last season, the Vale A Team have bounced back in style and following a 10 try victory against Rochdale sir proudly at the top of Miller Homes League Div 1
Against a big strong Rochdale side, the Vale forwards including the experienced Lee Farnworth, Gavin Speak, Gavin Barton and replacement James Welch, plus an important contribution from Robert Mudd in the second row, provided the ideal platform for the lively backs to launch a number of blistering attacks. Ina feast of attacking rugby the impressive James Hodder collected a deserved hat trick in addition to putting over three conversions. Scott Warrington opened the scoring with a try that showcased his blistering straight line speed but his second later in the half brought the crowd to its feet. In a jinking solo effort he evaded six would be tacklers on his way to the line. Adam McCluskie also showed his class with a 60 metre run after the Vale had confidently opened up play in their own half. Another of the Vale speedsters, Wayne Blythe, left defenders trailing in his wake on his way to the Vales fourth try and just before half time, man of the match Matthew Whittaker, registered the first of his two tries. Either side of Hodder's two second half tries, the visitors avoided a whitewash with a converted try but the Vale never relaxed their grip on the game. The hard working Graham Lumsden scored a try before Whittaker brought the curtain down on an afternoon of flair, pace, skill and bubbling enthusiasm.
