A twenty page document was presented to the Full Lancashire Committee Meeting last evening (16/1) outlining the need for the introduction of 14 team leagues in the North of England against the present 12.
The document had been prepared by representatives from Fleetwood, Liverpool St Helens, Wigan and Vale of Lune, highlighting the present problems being experienced by all clubs faced with a lack of regular Saturday rugby.
A full survey of ALL the Clubs in the North of England was contained in the package, showing a 75% favourable result at Levels 5,6 &7. The majority below these levels were shown to still be in favour of 12 team leagues.
A survey had also been carried out by members of London Div1 and South West1 - both areas were in favour of increased league size. At Level 6 in London, feelings were mixed but South West (West) and South West (East) were in favour.
The present Structured RFU season was included showing the 14 team proposal alonside National 3 positions, illustrating clearly how it could be effected.
Thanks were given to Ken Jones (Chairman, Lancashire) and Brian Leigh (Secretary, Lancashire) for allowing the presentation to be made not only at the Full Committee Meeting but also at the Executive Meeting held the previous week.
Fred Swarbrick.
